Study in the UK

Student Visa — Manchester Immigration Advisers

What Is the Student Visa?

The Student visa is for people aged 16 or over who have been offered a place on a course by a licensed student sponsor in the UK. Your education provider issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which is the starting point for the application.

IAUK helps students applying from overseas, students extending their stay or changing course in the UK, and graduates planning their next step, such as the Graduate visa or a Skilled Worker visa.

Children aged 4 to 17 who are going to an independent school apply for the Child Student visa.

Student Visa FAQs

When should I apply for a Student visa?

You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts if you are outside the UK, and up to 3 months before if you are inside the UK. A decision usually takes about 3 weeks from outside the UK and about 8 weeks from inside.

Most students can work limited hours during term time and full time during official vacations. The exact limit depends on your course level and sponsor.

Only some students can bring dependants, for example those on certain postgraduate research courses or with government sponsorship. We check this before you apply.

Many students move on to the Graduate visa or switch to a Skilled Worker visa. We plan the route with you before your Student visa expires.
