UK Spouse Visa Financial Requirement: The £29,000 Rule Explained

The UK spouse visa financial requirement is one of the most common reasons for visa refusals. As of 2024, the minimum income requirement stands at £29,000 gross annual income for the UK-based sponsor. Understanding exactly what counts — and what doesn’t — is crucial to a successful application.

What Is the Financial Requirement?

The financial requirement exists to ensure that couples can support themselves in the UK without recourse to public funds. The sponsor (the person already in the UK with settlement or British citizenship) must demonstrate they earn at least £29,000 per year before tax.

What Counts as Income?

The Home Office accepts several sources of income:

  • Employment income: Salaried or non-salaried employment, including overtime and regular bonuses if contractually guaranteed
  • Self-employment income: Based on the last full financial year’s tax return (SA302 and tax year overview)
  • Pension income: State or private pensions count towards the threshold
  • Rental income: Income from property can be included alongside other earnings
  • Cash savings: Savings above £16,000 can supplement income using a specific formula

The Cash Savings Route

If your income falls short, cash savings can bridge the gap. The formula is: savings needed = (shortfall × 2.5) + £16,000. For example, if your income is £24,000 (a shortfall of £5,000), you would need: (£5,000 × 2.5) + £16,000 = £28,500 in savings held for at least 6 months.

Third-Party Income

Income from the applicant (the overseas spouse) can only be counted in limited circumstances — primarily if they are already working legally in the UK at the time of application. Income earned abroad generally does not count.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting payslips that don’t cover the required 6-month period
  • Failing to provide bank statements that correspond to payslip dates
  • Not declaring all sources of income on the application form
  • Providing savings evidence that shows funds held for less than 6 months
