UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): Do You Need One?

The UK is introducing an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for visitors who do not currently need a visa for short stays. The ETA is a digital permission to travel to the UK, similar to the US ESTA or Australian ETA. Here is everything you need to know about the new requirement.

What Is a UK ETA?

An ETA is a digital travel authorisation linked to your passport. It is not a visa — it does not grant you leave to remain or the right to work. Instead, it is a pre-travel screening requirement designed to enhance border security. You must have an approved ETA before you travel to the UK.

How Much Does It Cost?

The ETA costs £10 per application. It is valid for multiple trips over a 2-year period or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each visit can last up to 6 months for tourism, family visits, or business activities.

How to Apply

Applications are made through the UK ETA app (available on iOS and Android) or online at gov.uk. You will need:

  • A valid biometric passport
  • A passport-style digital photo (taken via the app)
  • A valid email address
  • A debit or credit card for the £10 fee

Most applications are processed within 3 working days, but it can take longer in some cases. It is recommended to apply at least 2 weeks before your planned travel date.

Who Needs an ETA?

The ETA requirement is being rolled out in phases:

Nationality GroupETA Required?Rollout Date
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals: Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAEYesAlready live
Non-European nationals who are currently non-visa nationalsYes2025
European nationals (EU, EEA, Switzerland)Yes2025
British and Irish citizensNoN/A
Those with valid UK visas or immigration statusNoN/A

Who Does NOT Need an ETA?

You do not need an ETA if you:

  • Are a British or Irish citizen
  • Have a valid UK visa (e.g., Skilled Worker, Student, Family visa)
  • Have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
  • Are transiting through the UK without passing border control (in some cases)

What Happens If You Travel Without an ETA?

Airlines and carriers are expected to check ETA status before boarding. If you do not have an approved ETA, you may be denied boarding. If you arrive at the UK border without one, you could be refused entry. There is no provision to apply for an ETA at the border.

Important Considerations

  • An ETA does not guarantee entry — border officers retain discretion to refuse entry
  • If you have a criminal record, previous visa refusals, or other adverse immigration history, your ETA application could be refused
  • Refused ETA applications can be reconsidered but there is no formal right of appeal
