Home » Skilled Worker Visa Salary Threshold 2025: Everything You Need to Know
The UK government has introduced significant changes to the Skilled Worker visa salary threshold, effective from April 2024. The minimum salary requirement has risen from £26,200 to £38,700, representing one of the largest single increases in immigration fee history. This change affects tens of thousands of prospective applicants and their employers.
Previously, Skilled Worker visa applicants needed to demonstrate a minimum salary of £26,200 or the going rate for their occupation — whichever was higher. The new general threshold of £38,700 replaces this baseline figure. However, the going rate for specific occupations may still apply if it exceeds £38,700.
The new threshold applies to all new Skilled Worker visa applications submitted after April 2024. Those who already hold a Skilled Worker visa are not affected until they apply to extend or switch employers. This means existing visa holders can continue working under the previous salary conditions until their current visa expires.
Several important exceptions exist:
It is essential to check both the general threshold (£38,700) and the going rate for your specific SOC code. You must meet whichever is higher. The going rate is calculated on a pro-rata basis for part-time roles, using hourly rates published by the Home Office.
Employers sponsoring Skilled Workers should review all current and planned roles to ensure salaries meet the new thresholds. For roles that fall below £38,700, consider whether any exceptions apply. If not, the salary may need to be increased before a Certificate of Sponsorship can be assigned.
