Home » UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): Do You Need One?
The UK is introducing an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for visitors who do not currently need a visa for short stays. The ETA is a digital permission to travel to the UK, similar to the US ESTA or Australian ETA. Here is everything you need to know about the new requirement.
An ETA is a digital travel authorisation linked to your passport. It is not a visa — it does not grant you leave to remain or the right to work. Instead, it is a pre-travel screening requirement designed to enhance border security. You must have an approved ETA before you travel to the UK.
The ETA costs £10 per application. It is valid for multiple trips over a 2-year period or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each visit can last up to 6 months for tourism, family visits, or business activities.
Applications are made through the UK ETA app (available on iOS and Android) or online at gov.uk. You will need:
Most applications are processed within 3 working days, but it can take longer in some cases. It is recommended to apply at least 2 weeks before your planned travel date.
The ETA requirement is being rolled out in phases:
| Nationality Group | ETA Required? | Rollout Date |
|---|---|---|
| Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals: Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE | Yes | Already live |
| Non-European nationals who are currently non-visa nationals | Yes | 2025 |
| European nationals (EU, EEA, Switzerland) | Yes | 2025 |
| British and Irish citizens | No | N/A |
| Those with valid UK visas or immigration status | No | N/A |
You do not need an ETA if you:
Airlines and carriers are expected to check ETA status before boarding. If you do not have an approved ETA, you may be denied boarding. If you arrive at the UK border without one, you could be refused entry. There is no provision to apply for an ETA at the border.
